Tips to Maintain Your New Driveway

Liquid asphalt needs a certain amount of time to harden and cure. It can typically take 6-12 months before the asphalt is fully hardened and will remain somewhat soft and pliable.

Keep vehicles off your new driveway for at least three full days, and longer if the temperature is hot. You can walk on your new driveway immediately without worry.

When driving on your new driveway, take all precautions - new driveways can be scarred by cars starting out too fast, pulling in too quickly, and hard steering. Also, try to not park in the same spot each day as this can cause depressions in the asphalt.

Some Precautions While Maintaining Your Driveway

Avoid placing too much weight on your driveway. Large vehicles, such as RVs, can cause depressions in the asphalt. Also, avoid using a jack stand directly on the asphalt. If you have to use a jack, place a piece of plywood under the stand.

Pointed objects such as heels, lawn chairs, and bicycle kickstands can also cause damage to a new driveway. The weakest area of a driveway is the edges. Avoid driving along the edges at all times, and be sure to back fill any exposed edges.

Avoid spilling chemicals such as oil, antifreeze, gasoline, and other toxic fluids on new asphalt. These chemicals will dilute the liquid asphalt and cause damage now and in the future. We recommend using a sealer on your driveway every 2 to 4 years.
